(Jack and Christian Shephard are sitting at a conference table with other
physicians.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: ... by the time I was called in, the damage was
irreversible.

CUT TO:

JACK: I need to - (clears throat) -- revise my statement. (Christian Shephard
stares at Jack.) I didn't come into the O.R. until well into the procedure.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: (interrupts) Jack, this is not --

JACK: (firmly) By the time I got there, it was clear that my father severed
the patient's hepatic artery, which, in MY professional opinion, led to her
death.

(Jack looks at his Dad.)

[Scene and Voice over from 1X08: Confidence Man]

[INT. BEACH - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Sawyer sits alone of the beach, his back up against a tree. He has the letter

KATE: Then I looked at the envelope. You wrote this letter. Your name's not
Sawyer, is it?

SAWYER: It was his name. He was a Confidence man. Romanced my mother to get
to the money. Wiped him out clean. Left a mess behind.

KATE: You were just a kid.

(Sawyer grabs the envelope out from Kate's hands. He glares at her.)

door.)

[INT. YOUNG SAWYER'S BEDROOM - NIGHT - FLASHBACK]

(Young Sawyer's mom wakes him up.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): (softly) Wake up.

MAN (SAWYER'S DAD): (shouting through door) Open this door!

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): He's here.

MAN (SAWYER'S DAD): (shouting through door) Open this door!

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): Come on. Got to get you up.

(She pushes the bedspread aside and pulls him out of bed. The pounding on the
door continues.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): He'll think you're still with your grandparents, okay?
Get under the bed.

(Young Sawyer looks back at the door.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): Let's go. Okay.

(Laura gently turns Young Sawyer's head to look at her as she instructs him.
The pounding and shouting continue.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): Listen to mommy. This is really important.

MAN (SAWYER'S DAD): (shouting through door) Open this door!

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): Get under the bed. Don't make a sound. Don't come out.
No matter what happens, don't come out, okay?

YOUNG SAWYER: Okay.

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): Oh, god. Oh ...

(She hugs him.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): I love you.

SAWYER: I love you, too, mommy.

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): Let's go. Down you go. All right, be real quiet.

(She tucks Young Sawyer under the bed. He scrambles and hides all the way
inside. She turns and heads out of the bedroom.)

MAN (SAWYER'S DAD): (o.s.) Laura, open this door!

(She closes the door behind her. Hidden under the bed, Young Sawyer hears his
parents scream at each other.)

MAN (SAWYER'S DAD): (o.s.) Laura!

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): (o.s.) Stop it!

(The pounding on the door continues.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): (o.s.) Stop it!

MAN (SAWYER'S DAD): (o.s.) Laura!

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): (crying) (o.s.) Go away!

(We hear a loud smashing thump against the door. Under the bed, Young Sawyer
sees a sliver of light from under his closed bedroom door.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): (o.s.) Stop it!

(The door smashes open.)

LAURA (SAWYER'S MOM): (o.s.) What the hell is wrong with you? I'm calling the
police! Get out of here! What are you doing? What the hell are you doing with
a gun! Get out --

(Through the door, we hear a gunshot and the sound of a body hitting the floor
with a heavy thud.)

(Then everything's very quiet.)

(Young Sawyer stares at his bedroom door, a crack of light emits from under it.
He hears footsteps and sees the shadow of a pair of feet stop in front of the
door.)

(The bedroom door squeaks open.)

(From under the bed, Young Sawyer sees someone in jeans and boots step into the
room .)

(His dad pauses.)

(He sits down on the bed, the bed creaking under his weight.)

(After a moment, we hear the gun cock.)

(A gun fires.)

(The bed creaks when the dead body slumps on it.)

[EXT. BEACH - SAWYER'S TENT -- NIGHT - PRESENT]

(Sawyer's jolted awake. He looks around and remembers where he is. He's in his
tent, the sounds of the ocean crashing on the shore outside is heard.)

(He also hears the sounds of a boar snorting and growling nearby.)

(Extremely nearby.)

(Sawyer looks around and sees movement directly in front of him. The boar is in
his tent going through his stuff. Sawyer reaches for and picks up the
flashlight. He turns it on, shining the light directly at the boar.)

(The boar doesn't run. He turns and stays put staring at Sawyer. Sawyer
scrambles to his feet. He picks up a stick and swings it like a bat at the
boar.)

[EXT. BEACH - SAWYER'S TENT - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]

(The Boar grunts, growls and takes off running clear through the tent taking
Sawyer's tarp with it, the tent material flapping as it scampers across the
sand.)

(The Boar runs through the beach. Sawyer takes off after it. The others wake
up and watch the boar run through their camp with Sawyer running after it.)

[EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS]

(Sawyer bursts through the tall grass. He looks around and doesn't see
anything. He's lost the boar. Sawyer turns to head back to camp.)

(Suddenly, he hears faint voices whispering.)

(Sawyer stops and turns around. The whispering fades into nothing. He looks
around and doesn't see anything in the brush.)

(As he looks around, the whispering starts up again. Sawyer can't believe it.
He looks around and sees no one.)

(Suddenly, a single voice rises out from the whispers:

WHISPER (MALE VOICE): It'll come back around.

(Sawyer turns and looks up at the night sky, a scared look frozen on his face.)

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH - SAWYER'S TENT -- DAY]

(Sawyer kneels down in the center of what used to be his shelter - sans tarp --
his stuff scattered around him. He throws some things into a suitcase. He
looks up as Sayid walks up to him. He continues to dump stuff into the
suitcase.)

SAYID: Boar took your tarp?

SAWYER: It was dark, but, yeah, pretty sure it was a boar.

SAYID: I thought the boar had vacated this area.

SAWYER: Well, genius, I think we got some bad info.

SAYID: What was he doing inside your tent?

SAWYER: It was staring at me. Then it came at me, so I hit it, and it ran off
into the jungle.

SAYID: With your tarp. (deadpans) Perhaps he wanted to go camping.

SAWYER: You enjoying yourself?

(Sayid smiles.)

SAYID: Yes.

SAWYER: Well ... (Sawyer closes his suitcase and stands up.) ... laugh it up,
Muhammed. But I come back and find my stuff's gone, I'm coming after you.

(Like Sayid cares. He smiles, turns and starts walking away. As he goes,
something occurs to Sawyer.)

SAWYER: Sayid?

(Sayid turns around. Sawyer walks up to him.)

SAWYER: What did you hear? (Puzzled, Sayid shakes his head.) After you ran
into the French Woman, you said you heard something in the jungle.

SAYID: I was injured and I was exhausted. My mind was playing tricks.

SAWYER: What did you hear?

SAYID: I thought I heard whispering.

SAWYER: What was it saying?

SAYID: Why? Did you hear something?

(Sawyer doesn't want to go there.)

SAWYER: Forget it. I didn't hear anything.

(He turns and walks away from Sayid. Sayid watches him go. Camera holds on
Sawyer as he walks away.)

[SAWYER]

(Slow motion on Sawyer walking.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) DOOR SQUEAKS OPEN

CUT TO:

[INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT - FLASHBACK]

(The hotel room door opens. Sawyer and a woman are kissing. They stop in the
corridor.)

WOMAN: What are you so afraid of?

(Sawyer kisses her.)

SAWYER: Hah ... You're the one trembling, sweetness.

(The door swings shut.)

(She laughs as Sawyer suddenly picks her up and carries her over to the bed.)

(He kneels on the bed carrying her to the middle. On the bed, they start
kissing again.)

HIBBS: (o.s.) Okay, this is really awkward.

(The woman gasps and looks up at the shadow in the dark corner of the room.
Sawyer gets up and turns to look.)

(Hibbs turns the lamp on.)

HIBBS: But if I don't say something now, things are liable to get downright
embarrassing.

SAWYER: Hibbs.

(The woman buttons up her blouse.)

HIBBS: Hello, Sawyer. (to the woman) Ma'am, I must apologize. I figured my
good friend Sawyer here would be alone. (to Sawyer) I just need a few minutes.

(Sawyer turns to the woman. He grabs her hand.)

SAWYER: Listen, baby --

WOMAN: Baby, who is this?

(Sawyer starts to lead the woman back toward the door.)

SAWYER: Listen. You go down to the bar.

WOMAN: No.

SAWYER: You get a drink.

WOMAN: No, I don't want to leave you here.

SAWYER: As soon as I get rid of him, then I'll come get you and I'll explain
everything.

WOMAN: But --

(The woman turns and takes a couple of steps back into the room. She turns and
heads back toward Sawyer. Sawyer leads her to the door.)

SAWYER: Listen. Just trust me on this. (He opens the door.) I will find you.
I promise. (He kisses her as she steps out of the room.) Promise.

(He closes the door. Sawyer turns and heads back into the room. He's pissed.)

HIBBS: I got to hand it to you, Sawbucks -- how you find women that beautiful
to work your grift ...

(Hibbs is standing up when Sawyer reaches him, grabs him by the shirt and slams
him hard up against the wall.)

HIBBS: Ahh!

SAWYER: Now, if I'm not mistaken, I'm fairly certain I said I'd kill you if I
ever saw you again.

HIBBS: (croaks) That's why I'm here. To make things right. Besides, we both
know you ain't the killing type.

(Sawyer lets Hibbs go. Hibbs rubs his neck. He takes out an envelope and drops
it on the table.)

HIBBS: Here. Figure that makes us even for the Tampa job.

SAWYER: What could possibly make us even for the Tampa job?

HIBBS: How about the known whereabouts of the man who ruined your life? I'm
gonna make myself a drink. You want one?

(Hibbs walks past Sawyer over to the bar. Sawyer looks at the envelope on the
table.)

HIBBS: You remember old man Parks, right? Ran capper for us on that gig in
Atlanta?

(Sawyer sits down and pulls the envelope toward him. He looks at the file
folder inside.)

SAWYER: Yeah, what about him?

HIBBS: He's been working the wire at an off-track parlor down in Sydney. So
last week, one of his regulars gets a little too sauced, starts running his
mouth off about his glory days as a grifter. That guy. Frank Duckett. Real
hard-luck case -- gambling addict, alcoholic. Runs a shrimp truck. Back in the
day, this guy Duckett was quite the hustler. He ran the romance angle. Hook
the wife, take the husband for all the money. Was pretty good at it, too, from
what I hear. Until sadly one of his marks in despair took a gun, shot up his
wife, and blew his own head off ...

(Sawyer looks up from the file and turns to look at Hibbs.)

HIBBS: ... all in front of their little boy. I paid Tony to pull his jacket.
Turns out Frank Duckett used to be named Frank Sawyer, a name I believe you
appropriated for yourself.

(Sawyer picks up the photo of Frank Duckett and looks at it.)

SAWYER: This is him?

HIBBS: That's him.

(Hibbs drinks.)

[EXT. CAVES - DAY - PRESENT]

(Kate releases the cartridge from the gun. She hands it to Jack.)

KATE: Thanks for the loaner.

(He takes it from her and puts it in the open case.)

JACK: Always a pleasure.

KATE: So is anyone curious where they came from?

(Jack puts the guns in the case.)

JACK: The others knew there was a Marshal on the plane. I guess they just
assumed he was traveling alone, ... (Jack shuts the case.) ... protecting them
from terrorists. (He locks the case.) Sounds like a good theory to me.

(Jack puts the case back under the rock. He covers the case with some grass.)

KATE: Did you get all the guns back?

JACK: All except for one.

KATE: Who?

(Finished, Jack straightens and looks at Kate. Kate puts her backpack on.)

JACK: How about I give you three guesses?

KATE: Sawyer. (They head back.) I can get it back.

JACK: Really. How are you gonna do that?

KATE: Speak his language.

JACK: (chuckles) You've done this before, Kate, and if I remember it right,
you made out with him, and he never even had what you said you could get.

KATE: (retorts) Well, I only made out with him ... because torturing him
didn't work.

(They stop walking. Jack chuckles lightly and shakes his head.)

JACK: Let him keep the gun. It's not worth it.

KATE: What? Are you worried he's gonna shoot me if I ask?

JACK: I just don't want you to owe him anything.

(Jack turns and leaves. Kate watches him go.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES - DAY]

(Charlie is sitting alone in the caves busy making his own shovel with spare
pieces of metal. Claire walks up to him.)

CLAIRE: Hey.

CHARLIE: Hi.

(Charlie doesn't look at Claire. She looks around hesitantly, then sits down
next to Charlie. Silence ensues as Charlie continues to work on his shovel.)

CHARLIE: How you feeling?

CLAIRE: Very pregnant. I, um, had some dreams last night. Actually, more like
memories. You were in them.

CHARLIE: Sorry.

CLAIRE: Thought I'd see if you wanted to go for a walk.

CHARLIE: (sighs) Sorry. I have to ... do something.

CLAIRE: (nods) Sure.

CHARLIE: See you later, okay?

(Charlie takes his things and leaves Claire alone.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY]

(Sawyer walks through the jungle clearing.)

(He ducks under a tree branch and continues to walk. He stops when he comes
across his tarp abandoned near the base of a tree. We hear birds chirp above.)

(Sawyer stares hard at the tarp. He walks over to it and grabs it. He rolls it
and looks around.)

CUT TO:

(With the tarp tucked under his arm, Sawyer walks through the jungle clearing.
The whispering starts. Sawyer continues to walk. The whispering gets louder
and louder.)

(Suddenly, he stops and looks around. A single voice rises out from the
whispers:

WHISPERS (MAN'S VOICE): It'll come back around.

(Behind him, he hears a pig's grunting and snorting.)

(Sawyer turns around and sees the tall grass. In the tall grass, the wild boar
runs toward him.)

(Sawyer turns and runs for the tree cover.)

(The boar chases after Sawyer. Sawyer drops the tarp and continues running.)

(The boar chases after him. Sawyer turns on the speed and tries to get out of
the boar's way, but the boar is faster. The boar knocks Sawyer off his feet and
continues running into the tall grass.)

(Sawyer falls on his back into the mud.)

(The boar disappears into the tall grass.)

(Sawyer groans and sits up. He touches his shoulder gingerly and looks around.
He suddenly looks down at his very muddy shirt.)

SAWYER: (shouts) Son of a bitch!

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - SAWYER'S TARPLESS TENT - DAY]

(Sawyer sheathes a sharp knife in a leather holster. Kate peers over the plane
part to watch Sawyer.)

KATE: A boar did all this?

SAWYER: (disgruntled) Last night, he wrecked my tent. This morning, when I
went to get my tent back, it attacks me from behind, runs off into the jungle
like a coward.

KATE: (amused) A boar wouldn't just attack you for no reason.

(Kate walks around the plane part toward Sawyer.)

SAWYER: Thank you, Boar Expert. This one did. It's harassing me.

(Sawyer takes out the gun and checks the clip. Kate watches him.)

KATE: What are you doing?

SAWYER: Getting even.

KATE: (chuckles) Would you listen to yourself? It's a boar. Just go tell
Locke, and he'll kill it.

SAWYER: Nope. This is my fight.

(Sawyer opens his pack and closes it.)

KATE: Do you know anything about hunting boar? (He stands up, his backpack on
his back.) You are gonna get yourself lost or worse.

SAWYER: Since when do you care?

KATE: I don't.

SAWYER: Good. Then if you'll excuse me, I've got some revenge to tend to.

(Kate hides her smile and nods. Sawyer walks past her. She turns to watch him
head determinedly into the jungle ... to catch a boar.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. (AUSTRALIA) PIER - DAY - FLASHBACK]

(A boat horn blows in the distance. Sawyer walks along the pier. He looks
around. He finds the warehouse he's looking for and walks inside.)

[INT. (AUSTRALIA) GUN SHOP - DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Inside, a man sits in the dark welding. Sawyer walks past him and heads for
the back of the warehouse where Laurence is.)

(He looks up and sees Sawyer. Laurence sells guns.)

LAURENCE: You must be Hibbs' mate. (Laurence leans over and takes a gun out
from the case.) I did a few jobs with Hibbs back in the states. Nice enough
fella.

(Sawyer takes out a stack of money.)

SAWYER: He's a son of a bitch.

LAURENCE: Right. Indeed he is. (Laurence checks the gun.) A few disclaimers.
Australia doesn't allow its citizens to carry handguns. You get nicked with
this ...

(He holds the gun by the barrel.)

SAWYER: I'm not gonna rat you out.

(He hands the gun, handle first, to Sawyer. At the same time, he takes the
money instead. Sawyer checks the gun.)

LAURENCE: Secondly, you know, I've been doing this for a while, and a man who
buys a compact .357 with hollow-point loads -- he's not looking to scare or
steal. He's looking to kill. But when it comes down to it, if he finds he
doesn't have what it takes to do the job ...

SAWYER: Your sales pitch needs some work.

LAURENCE: (quietly) What I'm saying is ... you look a man in the eye and you
point a gun at him, you find who you really are, mate. And should you find
you're not a killer, there's no refund.

SAWYER: (shakes his head) It won't be a problem.

(He looks down at the gun and rolls the cylinder.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. OCEAN (STOCK) - DAY]

(Camera starts on a view of the beach sand and slowly moves over inland to the
side, through the bushes ... )

[EXT. BEACH - DAY -- PRESENT]

( ... and stops on Charlie and Hurley struggling as they carry Ethan's body
between them.)

CHARLIE: Hurley, look. I appreciate the help, but you don't have to ... I
killed Ethan. I can bury him.

(They drop the body on the ground near a flat diggable spot.)

HURLEY: Yeah, until he rises from the dead.

(Charlie picks up the make-shift shovel. Hurley stares at the body.)

HURLEY: (seriously) Dude, I know how this works. This is gonna end with you
and me running through the jungle, screaming and crying. He catches me first
because I'm heavy and I get cramps.

(Charlie ignores Hurley and starts digging with his shovel. Hurley has a shovel
of his own. Before he digs, he looks at Charlie.)

HURLEY: (concerned) Are you all right?

(Charlie doesn't answer him, but keeps on digging.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - DAY]

(Hurley walks up the beach over to Sayid's tent. Sayid is inside working on the
maps.)

HURLEY: Yo. Sayid. Can I ask you a question?

SAYID: Of course.

HURLEY: Did you ever get that Gulf War Syndrome?

SAYID: That was the other side.

HURLEY: Oh, right. (He pauses and thinks about it.) Then what's the one where
they're all, like, shell-shocked?

SAYID: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

HURLEY: Yeah, that's it. Did you ever have that?

SAYID: Why do you ask?

HURLEY: Because I'm worried about Charlie.

SAYID: What's wrong with Charlie?

HURLEY: I mean, he killed a guy. He shot him in the chest four times. Maybe
you should talk to him?

(Camera holds on Sayid.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY]

(Muddy and dirty, Sawyer trudges through the jungle. He comes to a patch of
dirt on the ground and kneels down to look at the imprint in the dried mud. He
touches it lightly and looks around.)

KATE: It's a footprint.

(Kate makes her way toward Sawyer.)

KATE: Based on the weight and the distance between strides, I'd say ... you've
been following Boone for about an hour.

SAWYER: Look -

KATE: Could be Charlie, I suppose.

SAWYER: I'm tickled you have taken such an interest in my affairs. I really
am. So don't take it personal when I tell you to --

(Sawyer gets to his feet.)

KATE: (interrupts) I want carte blanche.

SAWYER: What?

KATE: It's simple. You can't track this boar without my help. Over the last
few hours ... you have managed to follow the tracks of humans, birds, a rock
slide, yourself -- basically everything except boar. You have no idea what
you're doing.

SAWYER: Carte blanche ...

KATE: It means "blank check."

SAWYER: I know what it means.

KATE: Anytime I want something from your stash -- medicine, soap, whatever --I
get it, no questions asked.

(Sawyer scoffs.)

KATE: Take it or leave it.

(Kate walks past him. After a beat, Sawyer makes the only decision he can ...
if he wants to get that boar.)

SAWYER: All right. You got a deal.

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - CAMP - NIGHT]

(Sawyer and Kate sit around a small campfire. Kate nurses a water bottle.
After a moment, Sawyer tosses the small branch he's holding into the fire and
reaches for his backpack.)

(He takes out a small bottle and uncaps it. He drinks as Kate watches.)

KATE: Where'd you get that?

SAWYER: The plane.

KATE: Jack was looking for the liquor cart.

SAWYER: (smugly) It's a good thing I found it instead then, huh?

KATE: (smiles) Got any more of those?

SAWYER: I got a lot more of everything, but you ain't got carte blanche yet.

KATE: Is that a "no"?

SAWYER: All right, Sassafras. (He takes out a second bottle.) But if you want
a drink, you gotta play.

KATE: Play what?

SAWYER: "I never".

KATE: What?

SAWYER: "I never".

KATE: Am I supposed to know what that means?

(He hands her the bottle.)

SAWYER: Call it a way to get to know each other better. For example, I know
you've never been to college.

KATE: And how do you know that?

SAWYER: If you had, you'd have heard of "I never." (Kate chuckles and uncaps
the bottle.) It's simple. You say "I never," and then you finish the sentence.
If it's something you did, you drink. If it's something you never did, you
don't drink.

KATE: That makes absolutely no sense.

SAWYER: Learn by example. I never kissed a man. Now you drink, 'cause you've
kissed a man. (Kate drinks. She gets it.) Your turn.

KATE: I never implied that I've been to college when I never have.

(Sawyer takes a drink. He re-caps his bottle.)

SAWYER: I never been to Disneyland.

(Kate looks at Sawyer. She doesn't make a move to drink.)

SAWYER: Oh, that's just sad!

(Kate holds up her bottle showing him that she's not taking that drink.)

KATE: I never wore pink.

(Sawyer reluctantly uncaps his bottle and drinks.)

(Kate laughs.)

KATE: I knew it!

SAWYER: (explains) The Eighties.

KATE: Mm-hmm.

SAWYER: I never voted democrat.

(Kate one ups him.)

KATE: I never voted.

(She doesn't drink, but he does.)

(He thinks about it.)

SAWYER: I've never been in love.

KATE: (surprised) You've never been in love?

SAWYER: I ain't drinking, am I?

(Kate takes a drink.)

KATE: I've never had a one-night stand.

(Busted. Sawyer throws up his hand and takes a lo-o-ong drink.)

KATE: Bottom's up, sailor.

(He coughs a bit and looks at his nearly empty bottle.)

SAWYER: I gotta drink for each one.

KATE: Your turn.

SAWYER: I never been married.

(Kate takes a really small sip.)

KATE: (explains) It didn't last very long. (Her turn. She caps her bottle.)
I've never blamed a boar for all my problems.

(Oh, yeah. Sawyer takes a drink.)

(Sawyer leans forward.)

SAWYER: I never cared about having carte blanche 'cause I just wanted to spend
some time with the only other person on this island that just don't belong.

(Kate looks at Sawyer, smiles a little and takes that drink.)

KATE: I never carried a letter around for twenty years because I couldn't get
over my baggage.

(Touché. Sawyer's eyes slide over to Kate. He drinks.)

SAWYER: I never killed a man.

(Sawyer watches Kate. Kate doesn't make a move to drink. He doesn't believe
her.)

(Finally, Kate takes a drink.)

(After a beat, Sawyer takes his own drink as well.)

SAWYER: (drolly) Well ... it looks like we got something in common after all.

(Sawyer and Kate share a look, then Sawyer looks down.)

(The two lapse into silence. The only noise we hear is the crackling logs in
the burning fire and the crickets chirping in the background.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. YOUNG SAWYER'S BEDROOM - NIGHT -- PAST]

CUE SOUND: GUNSHOT

(Young Sawyer cowers under the bed.)

(He stares at the sliver of light under the closed bedroom door. The door
opens. He sees his father's legs and cowboy boots. His father takes a step
into the room and heads for the bed.)

(Young Sawyer looks terrified.)

(Cut back to: He sees the legs of the wild boar in his bedroom. The boar
grunts.)

WHISPER (MAN'S VOICE): (v.o.) It'll come back around.

CUE SOUND: GUNSHOT

SMASH CUT TO:

[CU: SAWYER -- PRESENT]

(Sawyer's eyes are closed as he sleeps, his head thrashes from side-to-side.)

[EXT. JUNGLE - MORNING - PRESENT]

(Kate shakes Sawyer.)

(Sawyer wakes up, panting. He looks at Kate.)

KATE: Are you okay? You're shaking.

SAWYER: I'm fine. (Sawyer sits up.) I was just having a ...

(He stops as he looks around. His stuff is scattered and destroyed around the
site. Kate also turns around, her look of surprise on her face evident at the
mess.)

SAWYER: I can't believe this!

(Sawyer gets to his feet.)

KATE: There are hoof marks everywhere.

(He grabs an open package.)

SAWYER: It ate all our stuff?

KATE: Nope. It ate YOUR stuff. Mine's fine.

(She holds up her backpack completely intact.)

SAWYER: Oh, that hog is gonna suffer. (He looks around the area.) I swear to
god ...

(Sounds of rustling leaves come from the shrubbery. They turn around and see
the leaves move. Sawyer runs for his stuff and pulls out his gun. He points it
at the leaves.)

(Locke steps out of the bushes eating a starfruit. Sawyer closes his eyes and
puts the gun down.)

LOCKE: Morning. What happened to your campsite?

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - MORNING - PRESENT -- CONTINUOUS]

(Locke is making a pot of coffee over the small campfire.)

KATE: So, what are you doing all the way out here, John?

LOCKE: Looking for salvage from the crash.

KATE: Find anything useful?

(As Locke talks, Sawyer is busy picking up the good cigarettes from the ground
and stuffing them back into the pack.)

LOCKE: The occasional scrap of metal ... two bags of coffee. I picked up your
path about a mile back. I thought I'd say howdy.

(Sawyer picks up his shirt and smells it.)

SAWYER: Oh, son of a -- oh! He peed on my shirt. He took my shirt out of the
bag and peed on it. (Kate puts her head down to hide her smile.) (scoffs) And
you say this ain't personal.

KATE: (explains to Locke) He thinks the boar we're after has a vendetta
against him.

LOCKE: Uh-huh.

SAWYER: That's three times it's attacked me.

KATE: Maybe it's got your scent. Doesn't like your cologne.

SAWYER: I don't wear cologne.

KATE: Yes, you do.

SAWYER: Yeah, well ... the thing's got it in for me!

KATE: It's a boar, Sawyer.

(Disgruntled, Sawyer sits down. Locke digs into his bag for a cup.)

LOCKE: My sister Jeannie died when I was a boy. She fell off the monkey bars
and broke her neck. (He pours a cup of coffee and hands it to Kate.) And my
mother --well, my foster mother -- she blamed herself, of course. Thought she
wasn't watching close enough. So she stopped eating, stopped sleeping. The
neighbors started talking, afraid she might do something to herself, I guess.

(Locke pours himself a cup and drinks.)

LOCKE: Ooh, that's good.

(Locke stands up and hands Sawyer a cup.)

LOCKE: Anyway, about six months after Jeannie's funeral, this golden retriever
comes padding up our driveway, walks right into our house, sits down on the
floor, and looks right at my mother there on the couch. And my mother looks
back at the dog. After about a minute of this -- them both staring at each
other like that -- my mother burst into tears. Beautiful dog -- no tags, no
collar. Healthy and sweet. (Locke sits down.) The dog slept in Jeannie's old
room on Jeannie's old bed and stayed with us until my mother passed five years
later, then disappeared back to ... (he waves with his hand) ... wherever it was
she came from in the first place.

(Sawyer thinks about it.)

KATE: So ...you're saying the dog was your sister?

(Locke looks at Kate.)

LOCKE: Well, that would be silly. But my mother thought it was. Thought that
Jeannie had come back to tell her the accident wasn't her fault, let her off the
hook.

(Locke looks directly at Sawyer. He takes a drink from his cup. Sawyer looks
away. Locke smiles at Sawyer.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. (AUSTRALIA) SWEET SHRIMP STAND - NIGHT - FLASHBACK]

(The car parks. Sawyer gets out of the car and starts loading bullets into the
handgun. Once filled, he snaps it shut and stuffs it into his jacket pocket.
He heads over to the Sweet Shrimp Stand.)

(Sawyer walks up to the Shrimp Stand. The owner, Frank Duckett, serves a
customer in front.)

FRANK DUCKETT: You're good to go. (The customer turns and leaves. Sawyer
steps up to the counter.) Only two choices -- shrimp in mild sauce, shrimp in
hot sauce.

(He waits for an answer. Sawyer doesn't answer. Frank Duckett continues to
wait. He whistles to snap Sawyer out of it.)

FRANK DUCKETT: Pal?

SAWYER: I'll go with the hot.

FRANK DUCKETT: Hot it is. (Frank Duckett turns his back to start the order.
Sawyer takes out the gun and cocks it.) Ah ... a fellow American, huh? Good
for you. You missed the lunch rush. Whereabouts you from?

SAWYER: Tennessee.

FRANK DUCKETT: Yeah ... I love the south. Miss those southern women.

(He chuckles. Sawyer tightens his grip on the handgun.)

FRANK DUCKETT: Been in Australia long?

SAWYER: Not really.

FRANK DUCKETT: For what it's worth, we have a special at the truck here --
half-price for all Americans.

(Sawyer's grip on the handgun is so tight, his hand shakes.)

FRANK DUCKETT: (over his shoulder) Name's Frank, by the way.

(Sawyer thinks about it for a moment.)

SAWYER: James.

FRANK DUCKETT: (nods) Good to meet you, James.

(Frank chuckles. He continues to cook.

Sawyer loosens his hold on the gun.)

(Finished, Frank puts the shrimp in the container and wraps it in a bag.)

(He turns around to hand it to his customer ... )

FRANK DUCKETT: One shrimp in hot sauce ...

( ... and finds that he's gone. The sounds of a car pulling away and the crunch
of the gravel under the tires are all we hear.)

CUT TO:

[INT. (AUSTRALIA) BAR - LATE AFTERNOON -- FLASHBACK]

(Sawyer downs his drink. He puts the shot glass back on the bar.)

SAWYER: Again.

BARTENDER: Are you sure about that, mate?

(Sawyer glares at the bartender. There are only two people sitting at the bar.)

SAWYER: Again.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: (o.s.) You tell him, cowboy. (The bartender fills
Sawyer's glass.) These bastards think Americans can't hold their liquor. Look,
I, uh ... I hate to hold my hand out, but I seem to have misplaced my wallet.

(Without looking up from his drink, Sawyer motions toward the man.)

SAWYER: Set him up.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: I drink to you. (The bartender fills up his glass.)
What's your name, cowboy?

SAWYER: Sawyer.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: To Sawyer. May he find whatever he's looking for at the
bottom of a glass. (He downs his drink and swallows.) So, Sawyer ... what
brings you to Sydney?

SAWYER: Business.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: You know why they call Australia "down under," don't you?
Because it's as close as you can get to hell without being burned.

(Sawyer smiles.)

SAWYER: (to the bartender) How about you leave the bottle, slim?

(Christian Shephard watches as the Bartender carries the bottle to Sawyer. He
gets up off his chair and moves closer to the bottle ... toward Sawyer.)

(Sawyer fills his own glass up. Christian Shephard puts his glass down on the
bar and Sawyer fills his glass up, too.)

SAWYER: So, what's your handle back in the States?

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: I was a ... Chief of Surgery.

(He takes a sip from his glass.)

SAWYER: Was?

(He puts his glass down to answer Sawyer.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Yeah, I was.

SAWYER: So we're in hell, huh?

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Don't let the air conditioning fool you, son. You are
here, too. And you are suffering.

(He finishes his drink and puts his glass down.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: But don't beat yourself up about it. (Sawyer fills the
glass up again.) It's fate. Some people are just supposed to suffer. That's
why the Red Sox will never win the damn series.

(Sawyer looks at him as he drinks. He waits for him to explain. Sawyer fills
his own glass.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: I have a son -- he's about your age. He's not like me. He
does what's in his heart. He's a good man. Maybe a great one.

(He sighs and looks at Sawyer.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: And right now ... he thinks that I hate him. He thinks I
feel betrayed by him. But what I really feel ... is gratitude and pride because
of what he did to me. What he did for me. It took more courage than I have.
Hmm. There's a pay phone over here. I could pick it up, and I could call my
son. I could tell him about all of this. I could tell him that I love him.
One simple phone call, and I could fix everything.

SAWYER: Then why don't you?

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Because I am weak.

(Sawyer thinks about it.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: This, uh ... this business that you have ... will it ease
your suffering?

SAWYER: Yeah.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Then what are you doing here?

SAWYER: It ain't that simple.

(Sawyer drinks.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Of course it is. Unless you wan to end up like me, of
course it is.

(Sawyer thinks about it.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. (AUSTRALIA) SWEET SHRIMP STAND - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(It's night and it's raining. From his car through the windshield wipers,
Sawyer watches Frank Duckett carry out two full bags of trash from the Sweet
Shrimp stand to the trash bin.)

(Sawyer opens the glove compartment and takes out the hand gun. He makes sure
it's loaded.)

(Sawyer has a determined look in his eyes.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Charlie is sitting on the sand efficiently husking coconuts. Sayid walks up to
him.)

SAYID: You're developing quite a talent.

CHARLIE: Yeah.

(Charlie continues. Sayid sits down and watches him.)

CHARLIE: I get it. You're hereto check up on me.

SAYID: You killed a man.

CHARLIE: A man who killed one of us. Who kidnapped Claire. Who strung me up
and left me for dead. He deserved to die. I'd do it again in a minute. Pardon
me if I'm fresh out of bad feeling.

(Charlie continues husking coconuts.)

SAYID: When I was in the Army in Tikrit in Iraq, the man who lived next door
was a policeman. One day his car was rigged with a bomb. It killed his wife
and three young children instead. They caught the man who did it. I
volunteered to be on the firing squad, and I did my duty without a single ounce
of remorse. (Charlie nods.) Then for no reason, I found myself waking up at
night, replaying what I did in my head.

CHARLIE: Looks like you're the one who needs checking up on.

SAYID: All I'm saying is that what happened with Ethan will be with you for the
rest of your life.

(Charlie stops husking and looks at Sayid.)

CHARLIE: Any suggestions?

SAYID: You're not alone. (Sayid stands up.) Don't pretend to be.

(Sayid turns and leaves.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY]

(Sawyer follows Kate in the jungle.)

SAYWER: I take comfort knowing someday this is all gonna be a real nice
shopping complex. (Kate steps out of the path and on to the side.) Maybe even
an auto mall. Where you going?

(She stops in front of a puddle.)

KATE: Know what that is?

SAAWYER: A hole in the mud.

KATE: It's a "wallow".

SAWYER: What the hell's a "wallow"?

KATE: Boar's wallow. It's his den where he sleeps. (Kate walks over to the
tree and touches the scrapings on the bark.) And these tree rubbings from his
tusks.

SAWYER: You mean he's around here?

KATE: Maybe.

(They stop and listen. They hear a baby boar squealing. Sawyer takes off
toward the sound and disappears in the greenery.)

KATE: Wait, Sawyer -

SAWYER: (o.s.) Gotcha! A-ah!

(Sawyer laughs. He steps out from the plants carrying a small boar piglet.)

KATE: I thought it'd be bigger.

SAWYER: Funny. Now we know daddy's got to be around here. (He holds the pig
and shouts.) Here, piggy, piggy piggy!

KATE: Sawyer, put it down! That's not funny!

SAWYER: Here, piggy, piggy, piggy!

KATE: Hey, what is the matter with you, Sawyer? You're gonna hurt it!

SAWYER: We're right over here!

KATE: Not funny!

(Kate lunges for the piglet. Sawyer turns away, keeping his hold on the small
animal.)

SAWYER: Here, piggy --

(Mad, Kate kicks Sawyer in the shins. He goes down and drops the piglet.)

SAWYER: Ow! Aah!

(The piglet runs back into the jungle.)

KATE: You're sick.

SAWYER: I didn't hurt it.

(Kate turns and heads in to the jungle leaving Sawyer behind.)

KATE: Find your own way home.

(He watches her go.)

SAWYER: (shouts) No problem!

CUT TO:

[EXT. (AUSTRALIA) SHRIMP SHACK - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Sawyer walks through the rain and mud toward the Shrimp Shack's trash bin.
Frank Duckett lifts the trash bin lid and tosses the bags inside. Sawyer takes
out the gun.)

(Frank Duckett turns around.)

SAWYER: Sawyer.

(He fires and hits Frank Duckett in the chest. Duckett's back hits the trash
bin and he slides down into the wet ground.)

(Sawyer takes out the letter.)

SAWYER: I got a letter for you.

(He kneels down and looks at Frank Duckett.)

SAWYER: "Dear Mr. Sawyer ... "

FRANK DUCKETT: Who?

SAWYER: You used to go by the name of "Sawyer".

FRANK DUCKETT: What the hell are you talking about? (coughs) You didn't have
to. (rasps) Tell Hibbs I would have paid.

SAWYER: How do you know Hibbs?

FRANK DUCKETT: You don't -- you don't know what you're doing, do you?

SAWYER: You borrowed money from Hibbs?

FRANK DUCKETT: I was gonna pay.

(Sawyer realizes what he's done.)

FRANK DUCKETT: It'll come back around.

(Sawyer stands up and steps back in horror. Frank Duckett slumps back against
the bins.)

(Camera holds on Sawyer.)

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK.
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Sawyer walks through the jungle. He stops and looks around. It's clear that
he doesn't know where he's going or what he's doing.)

(He continues walking through the jungle.)

(He stops and calls out.)

SAWYER: (shouts) Kate!

(He turns to continue, but stops as something in front of him catches his eye.)

(An adult boar is standing in front of him. It snorts.)

(Sawyer drops his backpack, his eyes on the boar. He takes out the gun and
cocks it. He points it at the boar.)

(The boar looks at Sawyer and snorts.)

(Kate is standing just beyond the large tree to the side of Sawyer watching
him.)

(Sawyer holds the gun at the boar. Each looks into the eyes of the other.
Finally after a long moment, Sawyer puts the gun down.)

(He turns and sees Kate standing there.)

SAWYER: (shrugs) It's just a boar. Let's get back to camp.

(Sawyer picks up his backpack, turns and heads back to the jungle.)

(Kate turns and follows.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH - DAY]

(Jin and Sun are standing on the beach. Jin is holding the net. Sun picks up
the other end of the net, helping him with it. They are a distance away and
talking as they work together.)

(Camera moves over and we find Claire sitting on the sand alone and watching
those around her. In the background, we hear Vincent barking and Walt playing
with him.)

(The sounds prompt Claire to turn her head and watch Walt playing with Vincent.)

WALT: Go, Vincent!

(Walt throws the tennis ball and Vincent takes off after it.)

WALT: Go, boy! Go! Go, boy!

MICHAEL: Here we go.

(Just up the beach near Walt, Michael is carrying a large piece of plane
wreckage he's adding to the boat.)

(As Claire watches, he and the other castaway work together to put the piece on
the boat.)

(Claire smiles a little. She turns and goes back to watching Walt play with
Vincent.)

(Unknown to her, Charlie is walking toward her.)

(Claire looks down and rubs her tummy.)

(Charlie reaches her.)

[CHARLIE AND CLAIRE -- CONTINUOUS]

CHARLIE: Hey.

(Claire looks up, surprised to see him. Charlie kneels down next to her.)

CLAIRE: Hey.

CHARLIE: Want to take that walk now?

(Claire smiles and nods.)

CLAIRE: Sure.

(Charlie helps Claire up. They start walking and talking as they go.)

[EXT. CAVES - DAY]

(Jack is in the clearing breaking long pieces of wood into smaller pieces.
Sawyer walks up to him. With Jack's back to him, Sawyer lifts the gun waist-
high and points it at Jack.)

SAWYER: (deadpans) Stick 'em up.

(Jack stares at Sawyer. Sawyer doesn't crack a smile, but continues to hold the
gun on Jack.)

JACK: Trying to be funny?

(Sawyer's lips twitch into a small smile as he steps closer to Jack.)

SAWYER: Yeah. I was fresh out of pies to throw at you. (Sawyer points the gun
up. He offers it handle-first to Jack.) Here you go, Sheriff.

JACK: I asked you for this two days ago.

SAWYER: And I told you to stick it. (Jack checks the gun and removes the
clip.) But I made a deal with your girlfriend.

(Jack walks over to his backpack and opens it to put the gun inside. He looks
over his shoulder at Sawyer.)

JACK: What did she give you?

(Sawyer was walking away. He stops and turns back to look at Jack. Jack stands
up and looks at Sawyer.)

JACK: Kate. What did she give you?

SAWYER: (smirks) Nothing she wasn't willing to part with.

(Sawyer smiles at Jack. Jack smiles and turns back to his pile of logs.)

JACK: (mutters) That's why the Sox will never win the series.

(The statement catches Sawyer by surprise.)

SAWYER: What's that?

JACK: Huh?

SAWYER: What'd you just say?

JACK: I said, "that's why the Red Sox will never win the series".

SAWYER: What the hell's that supposed to mean?

(Jack goes back to breaking the long pieces of wood into smaller pieces.)

JACK: It's just something my father used to say so he could go through life
knowing that people hated him. (Sawyer looks away as he puts the pieces
together.) Instead of taking responsibility for it, he just put it on fate.
Said he was made that way.

SAWYER: Your daddy -- he a doctor, too?

(Jack looks at Sawyer and nods.)

JACK: Was. He's dead.

(Jack turns back to work on the pieces of wood, but stops and turns to look at
Sawyer.)

JACK: Why do you want to know about my father?

(Sawyer looks at Jack. After a moment, he shakes his head.)

SAWYER: (quietly) No reason.

(With a last look, Sawyer turns and leaves. Jack grabs the next piece of wood
and breaks it into smaller pieces.)

FADE OUT.
