the hatch.)

LOCKE: (v.o.) How do you open a hatch that has no handle, no latch?

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Locke and Boone walk through the jungle.)

BOONE: People are talking about what we're doing out here every day. We're
gonna have to tell 'em.

LOCKE: (interrupts) They're not ready.

CUT TO:

[Scenes from 1X19: Deus Ex Machina]

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Hanging precariously off the edge of the cliff and on the branches of the
nearby tree is the plane.)

LOCKE: (v.o.) I saw a Beechcraft.

CUT TO:

[BOONE AND LOCKE]

(Locke sits on the ground as his legs aren't working well. Boone stands in the
forefront. Both are staring at the aircraft.)

BOONE: What is inside of it, John?

LOCKE: (v.o.) You're gonna have to climb up there for us and find out.

[CLIMB]

(Boone climbs up the side of the cliff.)

CUT TO:

[COCKPIT]

(Boone tries the radio.)

BOONE: (to radio) Anybody out there? Mayday. Mayday.

[AIRPLANE]

(The tree branch under the plane gives way and collapses under the weight of the
small craft.)

(Locke stares in astonishment.)

(The plane falls.)

(Boone is still inside the plane and is caught off guard.)

(The plane crashes nose first into the ground below.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES]

LOCKE: There was an accident. Boone fell off a cliff.

CUT TO:

(Jack turns to get more supplies.)

JACK: Tell me exactly what happened.

(Locke is leaning heavily onto the side of the cave wall.)

CUT TO:

(Jack turns around and Locke is gone.)

JACK: John?

(All Jack sees are some survivors watching in the distance. Locke isn't among
them.)

JACK: (shouts) Locke !!

FADE IN.

[INT. CAVES -- DAY]

(We continue where we left off.)

(Jack immediately goes into doctor mode and starts issuing orders.)

JACK: (shouts) Come on, out of the way.

(Boone gasps for breath. He's conscious and looks around although it doesn't
appear that he's cognizant of his surroundings.)

JACK: I need room.

(Kate presses on Boone's chest wound, as a group of them move Boone deeper into
the infirmary.)

JACK: Keep him steady.

KATE: Boone, can you hear me? It's okay. We got you.

(A group of familiar faces are there. Sun is there checking on Boone's leg as
they move him.)

HURLEY: What happened?

KATE: He fell down a cliff.

HURLEY: But he was with Locke.

JACK: Keep him steady now.

SUN: Jack, his leg.

JACK: I know he's bleeding. Keep him steady, damn it. (to Kate) You gotta
press harder than that, Kate.

KATE: I'm trying.

JACK: All right, slow now. Slow and gentle.

(Hurley and the others carry the stretcher and place it down on the cave floor.)

JACK: Easy!

(Boone gasps for breath. Jack immediately checks on Boone's pulse by placing
his fingertips against the left side of his neck.)

JACK: Sun, a pair of scissors in the second drawer of the cart.

(Sun is standing next to the cart, her eyes wide as she stares at Boone. She
doesn't move.)

JACK: (shouts) Second drawer!

(Spurred into action, Sun opens the drawer and digs through the various items
looking for the scissors. The metal instruments in the cart rattle against each
other.)

(She puts the scissors on the stretcher near Jack.)

JACK: (softer to Sun) Diapers in the first drawer.

(Sun immediately searches the cart for the diapers. Jack picks up the scissors
and turns to Kate.)

JACK: (to Kate) Sun's gonna switch places with you. (Jack turns) Sun, I need
-

(Sun is already there rushing around Boone to get to Kate.)

SUN: (interrupts) Yes, I understand.

(She switches places with Kate. She puts the fresh diapers on Boone's chest and
adds pressure to the wound, freeing Kate at the same time.)

(We continue to hear Boone rasping for breath.)

JACK: Hurley, grab me that first-class seat from up there. Also, I need that
mesh. We need to create some sort of sterile --

(Jack pauses as he realizes that Hurley is not moving. He's standing at the
base of the stretcher staring at Boone, looking pale, but not too pale.)

JACK: (shouts, irritated) Hurley, I swear to God, if you faint -- !!

HURLEY: (interrupts) No. First-class, mesh. I'm cool. (under his breath)
Lord in Heaven ...

(Hurley moves to get the items. Jack moves on to Kate.)

JACK: (to Kate) Get to the beach. Ransack Sawyer's stuff. I want his alcohol
-- rubbing, scotch ...

(Boone starts choking, interrupting Jack's instructions to Kate. Jack turns to
check on Boone.)

(He looks at Boone and realizes that Boone can't breathe. Air goes in, but it's
not coming out.)

KATE: Jack, what's going on?

(Jack puts his hands on Boone's chest, listening to his breathing and feeling
his lungs at the same time.)

JACK: His lung just collapsed.

(Boone struggles to breathe, his eyes wide.)

JACK: Okay.

(Jack goes to the cart and grabs the bottle of peroxide and a spike-looking
piece of metal. He uncaps the peroxide and pours it on Boone's chest. Jack has
his hands on Boone's chest, feeling ... and finding ... just ... the right
spot.)

(Boone continues to take short gasps of breath.)

(Jack takes the metal rod and stabs it into Boone's chest.)

(Sun gasps, quickly turns and shuts her eyes tight. No one was expecting that.)

(Air hisses out.)

(Boone starts breathing again, long raspy breaths.)

JACK: Okay. Okay.

(Kate turns slowly back to watch, her hand up near her face as she, too, was
caught off guard.)

JACK: (encouraging) Good, Boone.

(Boone slowly breathes in and out again.)

JACK: Good, Boone. That's good. Good job. (Jack removes the metal spike and
puts it aside. He pats the side of Boone's neck.) (encouraging) All right,
I'm gonna put a tube in that, and you're gonna be just fine.

(Jack gets up to get the plastic tube. Sun applies pressure to the chest
wound.)

(Kate stares at Boone, the gravity of his injuries levels beyond anyone but
Jack's comprehension.)

(Jack turns around and sees Kate standing there.)

JACK: What are you still doing here?

(Kate's mouth works up and down as she wordlessly tries to answer the question.)

JACK: (shouts firmly) The alcohol, Kate! If you want him to live, get to the
beach NOW !!

(Kate turns and runs out of the caves.)

(Jack works on inserting the tube to help Boone breathe. Boone continues to
struggle to breathe.)

(Jack closes his eyes and exhales deeply.)

CUT TO:

[INT. TUX SHOP -- DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Jack works on tying Marc Silverman's bow tie. Marc Silverman is dressed in a
tux.)

MARC SILVERMAN: Damn it, just get the stupid clip-on, huh?

JACK: You know why they call it a tie? 'Cause you gotta tie it.

MARC SILVERMAN: (retorts) You know why they call it a clip-on? 'Cause you
clip it ... on.

(Jack smiles.)

JACK: You nervous, Silverman?

MARC SILVERMAN: What the hell do I have to be nervous about?

JACK: It's a big responsibility.

MARC SILVERMAN: I can handle responsibility.

JACK: (chuckles) Maybe, but I know that you don't like to get up in front of
crowds.

MARC SILVERMAN: I'll be fine.

(Jack nods, not believing a word of it.)

MARC SILVERMAN: After about eight beers, I'll be fine.

JACK: (chuckles) She'll bust you, man.

MARC SILVERMAN: I'll brush my teeth.

(Done, Jack clasps his friend's shoulder.)

JACK: She'll bust ya.

(Finished with his tie, Jack turns him to look in the mirror.)

JACK: (sighs) You can still back out, 'Marty'.

(There's a long pause.)

MARC SILVERMAN: Nah. (He reaches up and straightens his tie.) It's just a
stupid speech. I'll make you proud.

(The Tux Shop Owner steps out from the back carrying a tux on a hanger, a tape
measure around his neck.)

TUX SHOP OWNER: Okay, groom's turn.

(The Tux Shop Owner helps Jack put on his jacket.)

MARC SILVERMAN: You can still back out, Jack.

(Jack smiles and chuckles at Marc's words. Marc pats Jack's shoulder.)

(Jack turns and walks out of camera frame.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) CLOTHES RIPPING

RESUME TO PRESENT.

[INT. CAVES - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Jack is ripping Boone's right pants up to his knee to check on his leg.)

(Boone groans.)

BOONE: (rasps) Oh, it hurts.

(Jack checks on the leg. Sun gets a glimpse of it. She gasps, turns her head
and shuts her eyes at the sight.)

BOONE: (rasps) Oh ...

JACK: It's a closed fracture, but I think I can set it.

BOONE: (rasps) Oh, my God.

SUN: His chest ... (she points) ... the wound -- can you, uh, (She motions
sewing with her hands as she finds the words) ... sew him?

(Jack leaves the leg to check on Boone's chest.)

JACK: He's lost a lot of blood. I don't know how far Locke had to carry him.

(Jack turns Boone's head to check on Boone's head injuries.)

JACK: Boone, listen to me. (firmly) Listen! (Boone's eyes flutter open as he
rasps for breath.) You are not gonna die. I'm gonna fix this, okay?

(Boone looks at Jack, his breathing raspy. Jack looks him directly in the
eyes.)

JACK: (promises) I am going to save you.

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(The ocean waves crash into shore. Claire walks across the sand past the boat.
She's got her right hand supporting her back and her left hand on the side of
her stomach. Jin is using the axe and chopping at the boat, still working on
it.)

MICHAEL: (o.s.) Got to flip them or they'll burn, Walt.

(Nearby, Walt is cooking fish on a stick over a campfire. Vincent sits near him
while Michael watches Walt cook.)

SAWYER: (o.s.) Hey, Mamacita.

(Claire turns and waves to Sawyer who is lounging on the sand near the fire and
eating some cooked fish.)

SAWYER: You want some fish?

CLAIRE: No, thanks. I'm not really hungry.

(She looks at the boat and at Jin, who continues to use the axe.)

CLAIRE: (to Michael) How long, do you think, till it's ready?

MICHAEL: Maybe a week. Maybe less.

(Claire nods silently. Michael watches her closely, a look of concern crosses
his face.)

MICHAEL: You okay?

CLAIRE: Yeah, I'm fine. All right, I'll see you guys later.

(Claire heads into the trees. Sawyer watches her go and turns to smirk at
Michael.)

SAWYER: She likes me.

(Michael doesn't reply to that one. He turns and looks over at Jin.)

MICHAEL: (shouts) Hey, Jin! Jin!

(Jin pauses and looks at Michael.)

MICHAEL: Want some fish?

(Jin shakes his head.)

MICHAEL: Take a break. Eat some fish.

(Jin waves him ... not now. He goes back to working on the boat.)

SAWYER: Man's got what I call an overzealous work ethic.

MICHAEL: Try obsession. He wants off this island bad, man.

SAWYER: Can't say I blame poor Kato. His lady speaks English all this time,
and he didn't have a clue? I'm surprised he didn't try to swim out of here.
Hell, I would --

(Kate bursts out of the bushes, running up to them.)

KATE: (interrupts urgently) Sawyer! (She gasps for air. Sawyer turns and
looks at her.) I need all your alcohol. NOW !!

(Sawyer gets up even as Kate is moving toward Sawyer's shelter.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

(Sawyer opens the suitcase. He moves the towel covering aside and starts
putting the bottles in Kate's open backpack.)

SAWYER: How'd it happen?

KATE: Locke said that, uh, he fell off a cliff while they were out hunting
boar.

SAWYER: The boar they never seem to get.

(He puts the last of the bottles in Kate's backpack.)

KATE: Is that it?

SAWYER: I'm afraid so.

(Kate zips up the backpack and puts it on.)

SAWYER: Do you need anything else? (Sawyer stands up.) I can come with you.

KATE: Too many cooks already. (She smiles appreciatively as she adjusts her
backpack.) But thanks.

(And Kate is off, heading back into the jungle.)

(Camera lingers on Sawyer's worried look as he watches her go.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES - INFIRMARY - DAY]

(Jack is finishing sewing up Boone's chest wound.)

BOONE: (mutters) I'm sorry. I'm really sorry.

(In the background, Hurley and a couple of other men are putting up the mesh
around the infirmary area separating Boone from the others.)

BOONE: (mutters) I'm sorry.

(A large drop of sweat runs down Jack's nose as he continues to work on Boone.
Jack finishes. Sun hands him the scissors and he wipes his brow before cutting
the thread.)

(Boone's raspy breathing continues throughout.)

(Jack hands the scissors and thread back to Sun and reaches for Boone's head,
turning him to check on his wounds.)

JACK: He needs blood.

SUN: (gasps) What?

JACK: Blood. Transfusion.

SUN: How will you do --

JACK: I don't know. I'll figure it out ...

(Jack moves to the cart, opens a drawer and gets something out. Sun dabs her
wrist to her forehead. They're exhausted and they've barely even begun. Jack
turns and looks at Boone. He takes a breath and wipes his upper lip with the
back of his hand that's holding the bottle of peroxide.)

JACK: ... after I set the leg.

(Jack moves over to Boone's leg and uncaps the bottle. Sun watches him and
makes a decision. She moves to the cart and grabs a cloth.)

SUN: Let me.

JACK: (shakes his head) No, it's okay.

(She takes the bottle from Jack.)

SUN: (insistent) Let me.

(Jack stops and looks at Sun. For a moment, he looks as if he's going to argue,
but her look says it all. He needs the break and she's not backing down.)

SUN: Get some air.

(Jack lets go of the bottle and takes a breath, quickly exhaling as he looks at
Boone. Jack backs away, leaving it to Sun. The others continue to put up the
mesh around the area.)

(As soon as he steps out of the infirmary, Charlie's there asking questions.)

CHARLIE: How is he?

JACK: Don't know yet.

(Jack turns and heads over to the water. Charlie follows him, persistent in his
questions.)

CHARLIE: Well, what happened out there? Where's Locke? You think that -- ?

JACK: I don't know.

CHARLIE: What, he just took off?

JACK: Yeah, Charlie, he just took off.

CHARLIE: Where's Shannon?

JACK: I don't know.

CHARLIE: Well, she's his sister, you don't think --

JACK: (shouts) I don't know where she is!

(Charlie shuts up and backs off. Jack turns back to the water, his head down
and eyes closed as he dabs the back of his wrist to his forehead.)

MARC SILVERMAN: (v.o.) And here she is, ...

CUT TO:

[INT. BALLROOM (PRE-WEDDING LUNCHEON) -- DAY - FLASHBACK]

MARC SILVERMAN: ... the future Mrs. Jack Shephard.

(The guests applaud. Marc Silverman kisses Sarah on her cheek and gives her the
microphone before stepping aside.)

(The microphone whistles from feedback.)

SARAH: Thank you. Wow, can I get another microphone? I think this one's been
drinking.

(The audience chuckles lightly.)

(Jack looks nervous.)

SARAH: A little over two years ago, I blew a tire out, flipped over the center
divider into oncoming traffic and was hit head-on by an S.U.V. My back was
broken. They all said it was irreparable. And then there was Jack. And he
promised that he would fix me because that's the kind of guy he is. Because you
are the most committed man I have ever known. Because you fixed me, I will
dance at our wedding. To Jack. My hero, (She raises her glass.) Jack.

(The audience applauds.)

(Camera holds on Jack.)

CUT TO
END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT

[INT. CAVES -- DAY -- PRESENT]

(Jack is back in the infirmary looking closely at Boone's leg. Sun walks up to
Jack holding a piece of wood.)

SUN: Give him this for the pain.

JACK: I think we're a little beyond herbal remedies here.

(Sun goes over to Boone.)

SUN: It is not a remedy.

(She fits the smooth piece of wood between Boone's teeth. Jack looks at Sun and
nods.)

JACK: Will you hold his shoulders?

(Sun reaches down and holds Boone's shoulders. Jack firmly grips Boone's
ankle.)

(He looks at Sun again and nods. Sun looks at Jack, bracing herself and Boone
for what's about to happen.)

(Jack looks at Sun.)

JACK: Here we go.

(Jack pulls Boone's leg.)

(The bone cracks, snapping back into place.)

(Boone screams.)

[HURLEY]

(Hurley stands just outside the thin sheet of mesh blocking the infirmary from
view. But not by much. He can still see the shadows of the three figures
inside. He sees Boone thrashing on the bedding, his screams echoing endlessly
in the small cave.)

(Hurley looks down at the ground.)

(Behind the thin mesh, Boone continues to thrash about, his arms and legs
flailing in the air.)

(Boone continues to scream, the pain unbearable ... even to those listening.)

(Hurley puts his hands to his ears to block out the sounds of his friend's
painful cries.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE BACK TO CAVES -- DAY]

(Kate runs back to the caves as fast as she can. She takes a quick turn and
continues running. She trips and falls, landing on her back.)

KATE: Ah!

(The glass in her backpack cracks.)

(Kate gets up.)

KATE: Oh, God.

(She takes her backpack off to check on the bottles inside.)

KATE: Oh no. Come on.

(Some of the precious bottles inside are broken. She picks up a broken piece of
glass and throws it back into the backpack.)

(Off screen, she hears a soft whimper. She looks up at the greenery off the
path to the jungle.)

(The whimpering continues.)

(Kate slowly gets to her feet to investigate. She steps off the path and heads
through the plants.)

(Further in, she sees Claire bracing herself against a fallen tree. With one
hand on the thick tree branch and the other against the side of her tummy,
Claire leans forward and breathes heavily through the pain.)

KATE: (concerned) Claire?

(Kate heads over toward Claire.)

KATE: What are you doing out here?

(Claire looks at Kate.)

CLAIRE: Nothing. Just leave me alone, please.

(Kate's eyes widen as she watches Claire brace herself again against the tree
branch. She groans and gasps through the pain.)

KATE: Oh, God. You're having the baby.

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Kate puts her backpack down on the ground, her eyes never leaving Claire. She
walks over to Claire and puts a hand on her shoulder; the other hand reaches for
Claire's tummy.)

KATE: Uh, Claire, we need to get you back to camp.

(Claire shrugs Kate away from her.)

CLAIRE: No, I'm fine. I just need to catch my breath.

(Claire sits back.)

KATE: It's not okay. You're having your baby.

CLAIRE: No, I'm not, okay? It's just gas pains. It's fine.

KATE: (insistent) You're having contractions, Claire.

CLAIRE: No, I'm bloody not. Can you just leave me alone?

KATE: Come on. I gotta get you to Jack. Please try to stand. Please.

CLAIRE: (shouts) Look, I can't !!

(Kate stops.)

(Claire gasps.)

(Deciding not to leave Claire, Kate starts shouting for help.)

KATE: Help!

(LONG SHOT: Kate looks around the area hoping someone, anyone will hear her.)

KATE: (shouts) Somebody help !!

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(Jin is continuing his work on the boat. He holds the axe in his hand and uses
the back of the axe as a hammer, pounding on the bamboo flooring.)

KATE: (o.s.) (faintly) Help!

(Jin stops hammering and looks up. He hears something. He looks inland and
sees no one. He's alone at the boat site, the others having gone and left him
alone to work.)

KATE: (o.s.) (faintly) Help!

(Again, he thinks he hears something. Jin turns and looks at the ocean. He
sees the waves crashing into shore. He hears it again, this time a little
clearer.)

KATE: (o.s.) (faintly) Somebody please help!

(Jin drops the axe and starts running as fast as he can toward the sound --
toward the jungle.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. TREE GROVE / JUNGLE - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(Jin continues to run as fast as he can through the tree grove that separates
the beach from the jungle. He runs and doesn't stop.)

KATE: (o.s.) (clearer) Help!

(Cut to: Jin runs as fast as he can through the trees toward the sound of the
person in trouble.)

KATE: (o.s.) (clearer) Help!

(Cut to: Jin runs to a small clearing and stops to listen. He turns around,
listening carefully, urgently, for the direction of the cries for help.)

(He hears the jungle sounds of birds and other creatures. Jin continues to turn
around, listening for the direction he needs to go.)

KATE: (o.s.) (clearer still) Please help! Somebody!

(Jin turns and looks to his left, honing in on the direction.)

KATE: (o.s.) (clearer) Help!

(And Jin takes off, running quickly, urgently through the jungle toward the
voice.)

(Cut to: Jin jumps over the fallen tree.)

(Off screen, we hear Claire whimper.)

(Jin looks up and stops dead in his tracks, his eyes wide at the sight in front
of him.)

JIN: (surprised) Oh.

(Nearly in front of him, he sees Claire sitting down on the log gritting her
teeth through her contractions. She gasps for breath.)

(Kate turns around and sees Jin staring at them.)

JIN: (shocked) (in Korean) (unsubtitled) ...

(Kate stands up and walks over to Jin. She's really glad to see him.)

KATE: (smiling) Jin.

(Jin turns to look at Kate. Off screen, Claire gasps.)

KATE: I need you to go to the caves and get Jack, okay?

(Jin turns and looks over at Claire in the midst of her contractions.)

KATE: You understand?

(Jin turns and looks at Kate.)

KATE: (desperate) We need Jack.

JIN: (repeats in English) Jack. (nods) Doctor.

(finally!)

KATE: Yes. Yes, the doctor.

(Kate turns.)

KATE: Please come here.

(She picks up the backpack.)

CLAIRE: (scared) Don't leave me.

KATE: Oh, no, no, honey. I won't. I'm not going anywhere, okay? I promise.

(Kate turns to Jin and gives him the backpack.)

KATE: (to Jin) Jack. Hurry.

(With a final glance at Claire, Jin takes off for the caves. Kate watches him
go.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES -- DAY]

(Jack is sitting down on the side of Boone near the mesh sheet. He's got a file
in his hand. He dabs his wrist to his forehead.)

JACK: Ask him again.

(Sun sits near Boone dabbing his forehead with a clean cloth. Boone is
shivering and gasping for breath.)

SUN: He's in shock.

JACK: That's why you need to ask him again.

(Sun removes the cloth and looks at Boone.)

SUN: Boone, can you hear me? What is your blood type?

(Jack sits on the side, his attention on filing the small piece of bamboo. He
doesn't look up.)

(Sun looks at Jack, but knows that he's busy. She asks Boone again.)

SUN: Boone, please listen.

(Jack has filed the small piece of bamboo into a point. He tries to check on
its sharpness by pressing it against his index finger trying to pierce it
through his skin.)

SUN: What is your blood type?

(It doesn't work. The bamboo isn't sharp enough.)

JACK: (softly) Damn it.

(Jack looks to the side.)

SUN: Maybe a smaller piece.

JACK: Veins are like a wet noodle. First you have to find one, then you have
to have a hollow needle sharp enough to actually pierce it. (frustrated) I've
got bamboo.

(Sun doesn't say anything.)

(Jack sighs.)

JACK: None of it actually even matters because I don't know his blood type.
Not to mention that his injuries --

BOONE: (gasps) A ... Negative.

(Sun looks at Boone. Jack gets to his feet and walks over to Boone.)

(Jack leans in close.)

JACK: Boone, what'd you say?

BOONE: (mutters) Shannon ... The plane.

(Jack looks at Sun.)

JACK: Did you hear "A-Negative"?

(Sun nods.)

JACK: (to Sun) Get Charlie, ask everyone you can find -- Everyone -- what their
blood type is. A-Negative, okay?

(Sun nods.)

SUN: Okay.

(She's already moving out to find Charlie.)

JACK: And find his sister. Find Shannon.

(Camera holds on Jack.)

SHANNON: (v.o.) Where are we going?

CUT TO:

[EXT. TREE GROVE TO BEACH -- DAY]

(Sayid leads Shannon through the trees.)

SAYID: This way.

SHANNON: (smiles) Oh, okay.

(She follows Sayid as he leads her through the trees. She steps up to him.)

SHANNON: (teases) Are you lost?

SAYID: No. Absolutely not.

(He stops, hands on his hips. He looks forward and points to the trees in front
of him - trees that look exactly like all the other trees around them.)

SAYID: Those trees look really familiar. (Sayid nods and starts walking.)
It's this way, I think.

(He steps out of camera frame.)

SHANNON: Did you just say, "I think"?

(Shannon follows him.)

(Sayid and Shannon duck under the last of the trees and step out onto the
beach.)

(Sayid stops.)

(Set up in front of them are three torches. In the center is a blue blanket
spread out on the sand. In the center of the blanket are a bouquet of
wildflowers, various fruits and a couple of filled water bottles.)

SAYID: Surprise.

(Shannon turns and smiles at Sayid.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES -- DAY]

(Jack rustles through the various bamboo leaves and branches he has on the
ground. None of them will do. He throws them down in frustration.)

JACK: Damn it!

(Charlie rushes up to Jack.)

CHARLIE: I found an "A".

(Jack turns and walks over to Charlie.)

JACK: Positive or negative?

CHARLIE: She doesn't know.

(Charlie consults his notebook.)

CHARLIE: I also found two B-Positives and one AB-Negative. (adds) At least,
he thinks so.

JACK: Did you find any O-Negative?

CHARLIE: Sun said A-Negative.

(Jack steps down from the infirmary and walks past Charlie.)

JACK: Where is she?

(Charlie turns and follows Jack.)

CHARLIE: We split up. I thought she'd be back here.

JACK: So you only asked four people?

CHARLIE: I asked the whole sodding camp. No one knows their blood type. I
don't know my bloody blood type.

(Behind them, Sun has returned, carrying a blue igloo travel cooler. Her arms
are wet up to her elbows. She puts the cooler down on the supply table.)

(Jack looks at her.)

JACK: Did you find Shannon?

SUN: No, I was getting you this.

(With a tree branch used as a prong, she picks up a black sea urchin and eagerly
shows it to Jack. There's a sense of excitement to her as she watches Jack.)

(Jack stares blankly back at her. He doesn't know why she's showing him this
when they've got more urgent things to do.)

(Charlie looks at Jack's non-reaction.)

(Sun puts the sea urchin back into the igloo container and takes out a single
spine needle. She shows it to Jack, holding it up to him.)

SUN: A hollow needle sharp enough "to pierce a noodle".

(With a doubtful look on his face, Jack takes the spine needle from Sun and
tests it against his own finger, piercing it. The sharp spine needle doesn't
break.)

(He looks at Sun and nods.)

JACK: It's perfect.

(Sun smiles, pleased.)

CHARLIE: Not to rain on your proverbial parade, but I thought you said we
needed someone who was A-Negative?

JACK: Or O-Negative.

CHARLIE: Right, which judging by your tantrum, no one is.

JACK: Someone is.

(Jack walks over to the supply table he's set up. Charlie gets it.)

CHARLIE: You? Why'd you make us --

JACK: O-Neg is the universal donor. (Jack picks up the plastic tubing.) It's
in the ballpark; it's not a match. (Jack works on putting the supplies
together.) My blood could put him into anaphylactic shock -- (He snips the end
of the plastic tubing.) -- stop his heart.

(He puts the scissors aside and fits the spine needle into the plastic tubing.)

(Charlie looks at Boone.)

CHARLIE: (softly) You mean he'll die?

(Jack looks up at Charlie.)

JACK: (firmly) He's not gonna die.

(Charlie and Sun look at Jack. Sun nods.)

(Camera holds on Jack.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) PIANO MUSIC

[INT. HOTEL - LOBBY -- NIGHT - FLASHBACK]

(Jack is playing the black Yamaha baby grand piano in the hotel lobby.)

SARAH: (o.s.) Those girls are checking you out.

(Jack turns and smiles.)

JACK: You're in your PJs.

(Sarah is in a white t-shirt with "44" on the front left shoulder and on the
back.)

SARAH: Indeed, I am.

(They share a smile.)

JACK: Are they cute?

SARAH: Who?

JACK: The girls that are checking me out.

SARAH: Mm, one of them's kinda cute; the other one's just trashy.

(Jack chuckles. Sarah sits down on the piano bench next to Jack.)

SARAH: "Heart and Soul"?

JACK: You got it.

SARAH: I'm taking the easy part.

JACK: Of course.

(They start playing.)

SARAH: You know you really don't have to do this if you don't want to.

JACK: How do you know I haven't?

SARAH: Because ... you haven't.

(She plays the wrong note and the duet stops.)

SARAH: Oops, sorry.

(Jack smiles and reaches for his drink.)

SARAH: It was a silly idea. I just -- I read too many bridal magazines. I
think it rotted my brain.

JACK: Sarah, I want to. I'm going to. I just have to figure out the right way
to say it.

SARAH: They're just vows.

JACK: Just vows?

SARAH: (nods) Hmm.

(Off screen, they hear a car door slam shut. Jack automatically turns and looks
- eagerly, but not too eagerly. He sees an older couple getting out of a red
four-door car. The disappointment is written all over his face.)

SARAH: Hey. (He looks at her.) He's gonna come.

JACK: (nods) Yeah, I know.

(He looks at her.)

SARAH: So, you stay down here as long as you need to. And when you're ready,
I'll be upstairs. (They kiss.) I cannot wait to marry you, Jack Shephard.

(Jack smiles.)

(Sarah gets up and heads upstairs. On the back of her white t-shirt is the
number "44".)

(Camera lingers on Jack as he watches her go.)

JIN: (v.o.) Jack!
JIN: (v.o.) Jack!

[INT. CAVES - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Hurley is sitting down. Jin is standing next to him, the backpack slung over
his shoulder.)

JIN: (in English) Jack. Doctor. J-Jack.

(Hurley turns and points over to the infirmary.)

HURLEY: Jack.

(Jin runs over to the infirmary and steps inside.)

[INT. CAVES - INFIRMARY - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(He stops dead in his tracks.)

(Sun looks up and sees Jin.)

(They're both surprised to see the other.)

(Jin is out of breath. He hears the sound of the plastic tubing being removed
and looks down. He takes everything in.)

(Sun has taped the tubing down on Boone's arm.)

(The camera follows the plastic tubing and shows the other end connected to
Jack's arm. Jack is sitting down as he pulls the excess plastic tubing free
with his free hand.)

(Jack is looking at Jin.)

(Jin looks at Jack and points back to the jungle. He starts speaking in Korean,
explaining what's going on there.)

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jin is talking and motioning with his hands. He leans forward a little in a
similar standing position Claire was in. He motions to his stomach as if he
were pregnant and the baby were coming out.)

JIN: (frustrated) Oh!

(He's not getting anywhere. He tries again.)

JIN: C-C-Claire !!

CHARLIE: Claire? What about Claire?

JIN: (urgently) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jack shakes his head, he doesn't understand.)

(Sun translates.)

SUN: He says Claire's with Kate. She's in labor. Just off the beach.

CHARLIE: (interrupts) Claire's having the baby? (to Jin) Where? Where?

JIN: (urgently) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Sun interrupts and looks at Jin.)

SUN: (interrupts) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jin stops and thinks as he answers her.)

JIN: (urgently) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

SUN: (to Jack) He says he thinks she's okay, but she's in pain.

JACK: Does he know how fast the contractions are coming?

SUN: (to Jin) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jin looks down and scratches the back of his head as he thinks about it.)

JIN: (urgently) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(He motions, his hands apart to indicate the length of time.)

SUN: Every two minutes.

(Jack starts asking questions and just as quickly, Sun is translating them back
to Jin.)

JACK: Is she nauseous?
SUN: (to Jin) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

JACK: Can she stand?
SUN: (to Jin) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

JACK: Is there any bleeding?
SUN: (to Jin) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

JACK: Did her water break?
SUN: (to Jin) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jin shakes his head as he answers her questions.)

JIN: (urgently) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)
SUN: No, none of that.

JIN: (urgently) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)
SUN: But she can't move.

CHARLIE: We should go. Uh, what do we need? Uh-uh. Towels, bandages, hot
water. (Jack presses his fingertips against the bridge of his nose, his eyes
closed.) (to Jack) How do we take hot water?

JACK: I'm sure you'll figure all that out. (to Sun) All right. You tell Jin
to take Charlie with him and go back to Claire.

SUN: (to Jin) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(She motions to Jin and Charlie. Jin points to Charlie.)

CHARLIE: I can do that. I know I can. That dilating thing, how do I look out
for that?

JACK: Charlie, listen to me. (Charlie starts digging into his bag.) Tell Kate
- (firmly) Charlie, look at me.

(Charlie looks at Jack.)

JACK: Tell Kate to wait until the contractions are sixty seconds apart. You
got that? (Charlie nods.) Now, she's gonna need to make sure that Claire
pushes, but not too hard, not too fast -- just until the head is clear, and then
as hard as she can. Now, when the baby is out, make sure she clears its nose
and its mouth.

CHARLIE: Okay, but you'll be there by then, right?

JACK: (shakes his head) No, I won't.

CHARLIE: Jack--

JACK: I'm not going anywhere.

(Jack turns and looks at Boone. Charlie turns and looks at Boone.)

JACK: I need to stay here. Now you tell Kate -

(Jack whirls around and looks at Charlie. Charlie looks from Boone to Jack.)

JACK: -- that she's gonna have to deliver this baby.

[EXT. JUNGLE -- NIGHT]

(Kate and Claire wait near a campfire. Claire has a hand on her tummy.)

CLAIRE: They've stopped.

(She chuckles and turns to look back at Kate, who is tending to the fire.)

KATE: (cautiously) That happens, I think.

CLAIRE: No, no. They're not coming anymore. I'm-I'm fine.

KATE: No ...

CLAIRE: I'm okay.

(Kate gets to her feet.)

KATE: No ...

CLAIRE: I'm okay, really.

KATE: Claire --

(Kate walks over to Claire. Claire, who has been sitting near the fallen tree,
stands up and turns around to show Kate she's fine.)

CLAIRE: No, no, no. I'm okay, really.

KATE: (warning) Claire, I don't think that you should be doing -

CUE SOUND: (O.S.) WATER TRICKLING

(Claire starts gasping as she looks down.)

CLAIRE: What is that?

KATE: I think your water just broke.

CLAIRE: (panicking) No, no, no.

KATE: Yeah, you know, I think you --

CLAIRE: (panicking) I can't have the baby!

KATE: Just hold on.

CLAIRE: (desperate) I can't have the baby now!

KATE: Just hold on.

(Claire falls silent and breathes deeply.)

KATE: Jack's coming.

(Claire sniffles as she cries.)

KATE: Claire, he's coming.

[INT. CAVES -- NIGHT]

(Boone is on the bed. Jack is standing with the tube still in his arm. He
paces, turns and walks over to check on Boone.)

(Jack leans in close, putting his ear close to Boone's mouth to listen for
breathing.)

(Satisfied that Boone's still breathing, Jack pulls away to continue pacing.)

BOONE: Screwed myself up pretty bad, huh?

(Jack turns and checks on Boone. Boone's eyes are open as he looks around.)

JACK: Hey.

BOONE: (sighs) My leg hu-hurts.

JACK: Don't try to move it. Can you breathe okay?

BOONE: It fell on me.

JACK: What fell?

BOONE: The plane. It was the plane.

JACK: Boone. Boone, Locke said you fell from a cliff.

BOONE: No. No. It was - It fell. The plane. (his voice fades) It's 'cause
of the hatch. We found a hatch.

JACK: Boone, Boone, stay with me, man. Hey, stay with me.

BOONE: Locke said -- John said -- John said ... not to tell ... about the
hatch.

JACK: What did Locke do? What hatch? What are you ... ?

BOONE: (gasps) My leg hurts.

(Boone stops responding.)

JACK: Boone. (louder) Boone!
JACK: Hey.

(Jack leans forward and puts his ear near Boone's mouth.)

BOONE: (mumbles) Shannon. Shannon.

(Jack sighs and pulls away. Boone continues to mumble.)

BOONE: Shannon.
BOONE: Shannon.

[EXT. BEACH - SECLUDED SPOT -- NIGHT]

(Shannon and Sayid are kissing.)

SHANNON: I need to tell you something.

SAYID: All right.

SHANNON: My brother Boone, he's not really my brother. He's my step-brother.
Our parents got married when we were, like, eight and ten. He's kind of in love
with me.

SAYID: In love with you? And how do you feel towards him?

SHANNON: I'll always feel something for him, but am I in love with him in that
way? No. Not at all. We're here for God knows how long, and so is Boone.

SAYID: Maybe we should go back.

SHANNON: I don't wanna go back.

SAYID: Are you sure?

SHANNON: Yes. I just ... need to take it a little slow. Are you okay with
that?

SAYID: I had no expectations.

(Shannon looks at the elaborate set-up on the beach. She looks back at Sayid.)

SHANNON: Right.

(Sayid smiles at her.)

SAYID: Hopes, not expectations.

(She laughs.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - KATE AND CLAIRE -- NIGHT]

(Claire gasps through a painful contraction. Kate stands near her, supporting
her as she sits.)

CLAIRE: Oh, God, that hurts.

(Claire groans.)

CHARLIE: (o.s.) Hello?

(Kate turns as Jin returns with Charlie. Jin is carrying a lit torch.)

CHARLIE: Hey. Kate.

(Jin puts the torch down and heads over to check on Claire.)

CHARLIE: (to Kate) Claire. Is she okay?

(Kate grabs Charlie, who is trying to crane his neck to get a look at Claire.)

KATE: (quietly) Where's Jack?

CHARLIE: He couldn't come.

KATE: What do you mean he couldn't come? He has to come.

CHARLIE: Yeah, he's pouring his own blood into Boone's arm right now.

(Off screen, Claire gasps and groans through another contraction.)

KATE: Okay. Okay. We'll just have to pick her up and bring her to him.

CHARLIE: No, Kate.

KATE: No, we have to get her to him before it's too late.

(Kate and Charlie turn and look at Jin and Claire. Jin is kneeling next to
Claire, helping her through her contractions. He looks back at Charlie and Kate
and holds up a hand for them to wait. He's got it under control; Claire's all
right.)

(Charlie grabs Kate and pulls her aside, his voice low and urgent.)

CHARLIE: Look ... Jack said you have to deliver the baby.

KATE: What?

(Charlie looks down to consult his notes or to look in his bag for something.)

CHARLIE: Now he talked me through it, and it's relatively simple.

KATE: No, no, no, no. Charlie, I can't do this.

CHARLIE: Yes, you can. I have water - I-I have towels - it's ...

KATE: You're not listening to me! I can't deliver this baby.

CHARLIE: (firmly) Well, somebody bloody has to!

(Kate and Charlie stare at each other. Charlie's not backing down.)

(Off screen, Claire grunts through another contraction. This baby is coming.
Kate knows that Charlie's right.)

(Kate turns and looks at Claire.)

(Meanwhile:

(Kneeling next to Claire and looking up at her, Jin starts talking to her.)

JIN: (in Korean) (calmly, soothingly) (unsubtitled)

(Claire looks at Jin, who is smiling reassuringly at her. He repeats a portion
of what he just said.)

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Claire calms down some.)

CLAIRE: (in English) You know, I was out there for over a week. There are
days I can't remember. I mean, what if -

(She looks down at her tummy)

CLAIRE: (worriedly) -- what if they did something to the baby?

(Jin doesn't know what to say. He looks at her sympathetically and listens.
Claire looks at him, scared.)

CLAIRE: God, I'm not ready for this.

(We hear the ground crunch behind her.)

CLAIRE: I'm not -- I'm so scared. (whispers) I'm scared.

(Behind her, Kate is kneeling.)

KATE: (to Claire) Hey ... I'm, uh, -- I'm scared, too.

(Claire doesn't say anything.)

KATE: (quietly) But we're gonna get through this together.

(Behind them, Charlie watches them. Silently, Jin watches them.)

KATE: Okay? Okay?

(Camera holds on Claire.)

CUT TO:

[JACK AND BOONE]

(Boone's head rolls from side to side. Jack grabs Boone's head and checks his
eyes. Whatever he sees, it's not good. Jack closes his eyes tightly.)

JACK: (begs) Come on, Boone.

(Jack lets go and stands up to pace. The transfusion tub still runs from him to
Boone.)

(Jack stops at Boone's legs. He leans against the table. Sun returns carrying
a bowl. She looks at Boone as she puts the bowl down.)

SUN: (to Jack) It's not working.

(Jack looks at Sun and blinks. Jack doesn't look good - he's pale, his eyes
red.)

JACK: Blood's not the problem. It's the leg. All the blood's pooling there.
Compartment syndrome. He didn't get this injury from a fall. Something crushed
his leg.

(Jack sniffs. He can barely stand.)

(Sun stares at Jack, assessing him.)

(She reaches down and yanks the plastic tubing out from Jack's arm.)

JACK: What are you doing?

SUN: (firmly) You've given him enough.

(Jack stares at her as if he wants to argue, but he doesn't. He takes a deep
breath as he blinks.)

(He turns and leaves the infirmary.)

(Camera holds on Sun as she, too, takes a deep breath and continues to work on
Boone.)

CUT TO:

[JACK AND HURLEY]

(Jack steps out of the infirmary, thinking. He takes a breath.)

JACK: Hurley.

(Jack walks over to Hurley, who tends the campfire, an open napkin on his leg.
He looks at Jack.)

HURLEY: Whoa, dude. You all right, man? You're looking kinda goth.

JACK: Look, where's Michael?

HURLEY: Beach, I think.

JACK: I need you to go get him for me, okay?

HURLEY: What for?

JACK: Just get him.

(Jack turns and walks away.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. HOTEL - POOLSITE - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Jack is sitting at the edge of the pool, his legs - long pants and all --
dangling into the water. He's got a half-filled bottle of vodka with him. He
lifts the bottle up and takes a drink. In his other hand, Jack holds a piece of
paper.)

(Christian Shephard steps out and heads over to Jack.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: (o.s.) Hey, kiddo.

(Jack looks up and sees his dad, who smiles at him. Jack chuckles as he puts
the vodka bottle down next to him.)

JACK: (smiling) Hey.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: How's the water?

JACK: Ah ... it's fantastic.

(Christian Shephard puts a hand on Jack's shoulder to steady himself as he slips
off his shoes and pulls his socks off.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Screaming kid next to me in first class. How does that
happen, huh?

(He pulls his pants up over his knees and groans as he sits down next to Jack,
his legs dangling into the water alongside Jack's.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Ooh.

(Jack sighs. Christian Shephard picks up the vodka bottle, looks at it and
raises it to his lips.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: What you got there?

(Jack looks down at the piece of paper in his hand as his dad drinks.)

JACK: Oh. Sarah wants us to write our own vows.

(His dad reaches for the paper and looks at it.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: (reads) "My heart skips beats at the sound of your voice.
My skin ... (He glances at Jack.) ... warms to the touch of your fingers. Where
you go, I will go," et cetera, et cetera.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: This is -- this is very nice.

(Jack laughs.)

JACK: Those aren't my vows.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Oh.

JACK: Those are hers. I stole them out of the room.

(Jack smiles embarrassed. His dad clears his throat.)

JACK: I can't write mine.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Yeah, well, you're a doctor. You're not a writer.

JACK: (chuckles) Right.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Right.

(There's a moment of quiet between them.)

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Sarah is a beautiful girl.

JACK: Hell yeah, she is.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: You love her?

(They look at each other.)

JACK: Absolutely.

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Then why are you sitting out here?

JACK: What if I can't be the husband or the -- or the father that I want to be?
What if I asked her because -- because I saved her life? Should I marry her,
Dad?

CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD: Commitment is what makes you tick, Jack. The problem is
you're just not good at letting go.

[INT. CAVES - NIGHT -- PRESENT]

(Inside the infirmary, Sun dabs at Boone's forehead with a clean towel.)

(Just outside the infirmary, Michael and Jack stand outside a large metal
compartment container with a sliding metal door.)

MICHAEL: So you're saying Locke lied?

JACK: He didn't fall. His leg was pinned under something -- something heavy.

MICHAEL: Okay, Jack, wait. The cargo container ... We got to do this? -- What
about the axe?

JACK: We can't use the axe.

(Michael looks at Jack.)

SUN: (o.s.) What are you doing?

(They both turn and look at Sun. She's stepped out of the infirmary and looks
at them.)

(Michael looks away from her. Jack steps forward to explain.)

JACK: His right leg is filling with blood. If I don't stop it, I won't be able
to save him.

(Jack picks up a thick piece of wood.)

SUN: You don't mean that --

(Jack looks at Sun.)

JACK: (absolutely) The leg is dead.

(He puts the piece of wood across the compartment doorway -- halfway in, halfway
out. The piece of wood is about the same thickness of a human leg.)

(He slides the metal compartment door down on the piece of wood, cleanly and
swiftly cutting it in half. The sliding sheen sound of metal-upon metal almost
as frightening as the unknown monster on the island.)

(Jack looks down at the wood. He nods.)

JACK: (softly as if to convince himself) There's no other choice.

(He sniffs and looks up.)

FADE OUT.

[KATE AND CLAIRE]

(Claire gasps through a contraction.)

KATE: Claire ... (gently) I think this is about the time you're supposed to
start pushing, okay?

(In the background, Jin and Charlie step a distance away from them.)

KATE: So, uh, push.

(Claire takes a deep breath.)

KATE: And ...

(Claire holds her breath.)

KATE: Don't hold your breath, honey. You're not gonna be able to push if you
hold --

(Claire stubbornly doesn't breathe.)

KATE: (alarmed) Claire? Claire, what are you doing?

(Stubbornly, Claire holds her breath.)

KATE: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Claire, you need to push right now.
(desperately) Don't do this, Claire, okay? You can't stop this. This is
happening. Your baby is coming and I need your help.

(Claire exhales and takes heaving, gasping breaths of air.)

CLAIRE: (crying) It's not going to want me.

KATE: What?

CLAIRE: It knows I don't want it and I was gonna give it away. Babies know
that stuff.

(Kate looks at Claire and nods understandingly.)

KATE: Do you want this baby now? Hmm? Do you want it to be healthy and safe?

(Claire nods.)

KATE: Okay. Because your baby knows that, too. You're not alone in this. We
are all here for you. This baby is all of ours. But I need you to push, okay?
Okay? Okay.

(Claire leans back to push.)

KATE: On the count of three. Ready? One ... two ... three, push. (Claire
pushes.) Go ahead. Good. Push.

(Claire grunts through the effort.)

(Nearby behind the fallen tree, Charlie and Jin wait. Claire pushes, her cries
painful. Charlie immediately takes a step to go to her, but Jin puts a firm
hand on his shoulder.)

(Charlie turns and looks at Jin.)

(Jin shakes his head, no.)

(Charlie settles back.)

CHARLIE: Yeah. Right.

KATE: (o.s.) Good, good. Yeah, that's good.

(Jin lets go of Charlie's shoulder.)

CHARLIE. Okay.

KATE: (o.s.) Push. Push.

CHARLIE: Okay.

(Charlie sighs as he settles down to wait.)

CUT TO:

[BOONE]

(Sun gives Boone a sip of water. He coughs as it dribbles down his chin.)

(Jack and Michael move a stretcher into the infirmary.)

(Sun takes a white cloth and covers Boone's mouth as he coughs. Boone coughs up
blood. She stares at the cloth now stained red.)

(Michael and Jack put the stretcher down on the ground near Boone. Sun looks at
Jack.)

SUN: Jack.

(Jack sees the blood on the cloth and stops. Michael looks between Sun and
Jack, not getting what it means.)

(Jack takes a breath and makes a decision. He looks at Michael.)

JACK: Let's go.

(Jack moves to Boone's feet.)

SUN: Jack --

JACK: On three. One ...

SUN: Jack!

JACK: Two ...

SUN: Why are you doing this?

JACK: Three!

(He and Michael pick Boone up by the blanket under him and move him over to the
stretcher.)

SUN: (desperate) He's bleeding inside. You're not helping him!

(Jack and Michael put Boone down.)

SUN: You can't save him, Jack! You just can't!

JACK: (shouts) Don't tell me what I can't do!

(Sun falls silent.)

JACK: Okay. One, two, three, go.

(Jack and Michael pick up Boone.)

JACK: All right.

SUN: Ja --

(They walk past a stunned Sun and head over to the storage compartment. She
tries to stop them, but they won't have it.)

(Cut to: Boone is back on the ground, his damaged leg inside the storage
compartment. Jack secures a belt tightly around the upper part of Boone's leg.
He pours some alcohol over the area.)

(Michael hands him a towel and looks at the compartment. He looks down at Jack
preparing Boone's damaged leg which is inside the compartment while the rest of
him is outside. Jack places the towel over the belt.)

(Finished, Jack stands up and pulls tightly on the end of the belt tied around
Boone's leg. Michael stands next to the compartment, ready to assist.)

(Jack pauses. He looks at Michael.)

JACK: You don't need to see this.

(Michael looks from Boone to Jack.)

MICHAEL: If you need me, shout.

(Jack nods.)

(Michael turns and leaves the area.)

(Jack looks up and finds Sun watching him from the infirmary. Their eyes meet.
The two stare at each other, her look says it all.)

(After a long moment, she, too, turns and leaves.)

(Now completely alone with Boone, Jack looks at him. Boone struggles to
breathe.)

(After a moment, Jack stands up and takes his position - holding onto the belt
with one hand while placing the other hand on the compartment's sliding door.)

(He takes a breath and prepares himself.)

CUE SOUND: METAL GRINDING

(This is really difficult for Jack. He starts to cry, struggling with the
decision he's about to make.)

(Sarah and Jack stand in front of the minister reciting their vows.)

SARAH: ... in good times and bad ... I risk it all because I love you.

MINISTER: Thank you, Sarah. Jack has also prepared his vows. Jack, if you
would, please.

(Jack doesn't say anything.)

MINISTER: Jack?

(Jack sighs. He looks at Sarah.)

JACK: I didn't write any vows. I've been trying to for a month, but ... I
couldn't, and ... so I started to wonder why that was. And as time went on, it
only got worse, because I'm -- because I'm not good at letting go. Or maybe I'm
afraid of what'll happen if I fail. But I know one thing. I would have never
been able to write anything as beautiful as what you just said. And last night,
Sarah, when you were talking about the accident, you got it all wrong. I didn't
fix you. You fixed me. I love you, Sarah, and I always will.

(Sarah smiles. They kiss.)

(The guests applaud.)

(Jack starts to pull the door down.)

BOONE: (o.s.) (weakly) Wait.

(Jack stops and turns to look at Boone who is now looking back at him.)

BOONE: Wait.

JACK: I have to. If I don't --

BOONE: I'm all messed up inside. You know it.

JACK: This is out best chance.

BOONE: There is no chance. Really. I mean ... look where we are.

JACK: I'm not gonna let you give up.

BOONE: I know you made me ... a promise. I'm letting you off the hook.

(Jack looks away.)

BOONE: Let me go, Jack.

(After a moment, Jack releases his hold on the door and looks at Boone. He
collapses to his knees next to Boone.)

JACK: I'm sorry.

BOONE: (whispers) Don't be.

It's close. Go, go, go, go. Push.

(Claire pushes and screams.)

(A distance away, Charlie paces as he waits and listens to Claire give birth.)

KATE: (o.s) It's really good -- I think it's close. Come on.

(Charlie sits down next to Jin.)

KATE: (o.s.) Yeah! That's it! Okay.

(Jin looks at Charlie and nods, a small sympathetic smile on his face.)

(Claire screams as she pushes.)

KATE: (smiling) Okay good! Good, good, good! I can see. I can see the top of
its head. It's almost clear. Come on. I can see, I can see it. Okay.

(Claire breathes heavily in between pushes.)

KATE: You're almost there. You're so close. You're so close. Ready? Ready?
Come on. One more. Go, push! Push, push, push, push, push!

(Claire bears down and pushes.)

(Kate smiles with excitement.)

KATE: Yeah, come on!

(Claire continues to push.)

(There's a squishy "I-guess-the-baby's-being-born" sound.)

(Claire pushes.)

(Claire leans back and takes deep panting breaths.)

(We hear the baby cry. Kate looks at Claire, her eyes bright with tears and a
great beaming smile on her face.)

KATE: (joyfully) You have a baby. You have a little boy.

(Kate lifts up the baby to show him to Claire. She hands the baby to Claire.)

(Claire gasps as they wrap the baby in a blanket.)

KATE: It's your baby boy.

(Behind them, Charlie and Jin step in closer to look.)

(Jin smiles; Charlie looks stunned.)

(Claire smiles as she hugs her baby. She laughs.)

CLAIRE: (smiling) I have a son. I have a son.

(Charlie smiles. He and Jin look at each other. With a happy grin on his face,
Jin holds out his hand to Charlie in congratulations.)

(Ecstatic, Charlie grabs Jin in a great big hug, the two men laughing, hugging
each other, jumping and spinning around with excitement.)

(The baby cries.)

CLAIRE: (to her son) Shh, shh, shh. Hey.

(She smiles down at her son in her arms.)

CUT TO:

[JACK AND BOONE]

(Jack holds Boone in his arms and helps him settle back onto the pallet.
Boone's eyes are closed, his breathing shallow.)

(Jack sits next to him and waits.)

BOONE: (rasps weakly) Tell Shannon ...

(Jack turns and moves in closer to Boone to listen.)

BOONE: Tell Shannon ...

(Boone looks at Jack.)

BOONE: Tell ...

(Boone stops breathing.)

(There's a long moment of silence as Jack waits for him to continue, but knows
that it's over. Jack turns and looks away with grief.)

(He reaches out and gently closes Boone's eyes.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[BABY]

(Camera opens on the newborn baby sleeping in Claire's arms.)

[EXT. BEACH - MORNING]

[AUDIO OFF]

(Claire, accompanied, by Kate and Charlie, return to the beach. Everyone there
rushes forward to see the new baby.)

(She smiles at them.)

(Walt leans forward to have a look, his face curious at the sight of a newborn
baby. Behind him, Michael puts a hand on his son's shoulder.)

(Hurley looks at the baby. Camera moves to the side and we see Sawyer in the
crowd gazing at the baby. Standing in front of him, Michael smiles at Claire.)

(Camera again moves through the crowd to show the happy faces of the other
survivors.)

(Jack is also there. He smiles as he shares in the joy of the new baby.)

CUT TO:

[SLOW MOTION]

(Something off screen has caught Hurley's eyes. He steps through the crowd
toward Jack. He taps Jack on the shoulder and motions with his head, nodding at
what he sees.)

(Jack turns around to look.)

[SAYID AND SHANNON]

(Sayid and Shannon have returned to the beach. They walk back to the group
hand-in-hand. They're smiling at each other. Sayid wraps his arm around
Shannon's waist.)

(Jack watches them. He breaks away from the group and heads over to them.
Hurley watches him go.)

[RESUME MOTION]

(Jack walks over to Shannon.)

(Kate stays with Claire, but she watches Jack go.)

[SLOW MOTION]

(Jack walks over to Sayid and Shannon. Sayid's smile fades from his face. He
looks at Shannon, then back to Jack. As Jack approaches them, he shakes his
head.)

[LONG SHOT]

(Jack, Sayid and Shannon stand on the beach as Jack breaks the news to Shannon.)

(Shannon takes a couple of small steps backward.)

[KATE]

(Sad, Kate turns back to Claire as the group joyfully shares the moment with
Claire.)

(Claire leans forward and kisses the baby on his forehead.)

(Claire smiles.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES -- DAY]

[AUDIO OFF]

(Boone is on the pallet where he died. Shannon sits next to him)

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY]

[AUDIO OFF]

(On a secluded portion of the beach, Jack kneels down with his backpack open in
front of him.)

[FADE IN SOUNDS]

(Slowly, sounds filter in. The ocean waves crash, the wind blows and we hear
Jack gasping as he cries.)

(He blinks back the tears and looks up.)

(Kate walks up to him.)

(He turns and looks at her.)

(Kate takes a seat next to him.)

JACK: A beautiful, healthy baby.

(Jack caps his empty water bottle and puts it in his backpack.)

KATE: Want to talk about it?

JACK: Talk about what?

(Jack zips up his backpack.)

KATE: Boone died, Jack.

JACK: (shakes his head) He didn't die.

(Jack stands up and grabs his backpack. He puts his backpack on.)

JACK: He was murdered.

KATE: What? Jack?

(Kate gets up. Jack ignores her and starts walking.)

KATE: (alarmed) Where are you going?

JACK: (over his shoulder) To find John Locke.

(Jack walks out of frame. Camera holds on Kate.)
